Style Lessons: Forecasting Our Fashion Future

Blake Lively at the Teen Choice Awards 2011

With Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week just around the corner, I can’t help but think about what new trends we’ll be seeing down the runways.

Trends come and go like waves. They are in. They are out. They come from the influencers or they come from the street. Each has its own journey to the top. So, as I’ve developed my own knack for foreseeing our fashion future, I’ve come to discover that spotting trends coming around the bend is one of my favorite things to do.

So, I’d like to make a prediction of a future trend, as well as explain to you how I got there. As each season passes, I’m storing more and more information, notes, data, and applications of what I see. So for me all those little details come together and voila! I can see trends.

So here we go.

Blake Lively wore an orange leather dress to the Teen Choice Movie Awards and the first thing I thought was, “Wow, that’s different” (Indication #1: Instinct)

So let’s talk history and trend patterns. (Indication #2: History) Leather has been on the upslope of the trend cycle for quite some seasons now. First emerging a couple falls ago; then trickling in for spring, becoming more dominant the next fall and then, this past spring, being a top fabrication choice for designers worldwide.

Leather for spring? Why yes! Seen at Michael Kors, Marni, Adam, Chloe and the list goes on and on. And it was seen in all garment types from skirts, to shorts, to dresses, suits and of course jackets. So leather is definitely extremely relevant.

Then Fall 2011 comes into play where we saw a fabulous array of colorful fur. (Indication #3: Evolution) Colored fur was everywhere from Gucci to The Row, to style star Prabal Gurung, Ungaro, Pucci and DVF. (Again, the list can go on and on here.) Colored fur is definitely one of the newest Fall 2011 trends that hasn’t been around in a while. Natural, and natural looking, fur colors have always been present, but to have such luscious colors in fur! It’s a whole new fashion ballpark.

Then that brings me back to Blake Lively. (Indication #4: Early Adopters) In my head, what happens when you add the massive leather trend uprising and the bold colored fur revival? For Spring 2012: I SAY COLORED LEATHER! It’s only in a few collections currently, trickling in, so it’s definitely out there already. But the next evolution is upon us and I cannot wait to see it emerge. It’s luxury at its finest, fused with wearability and sass.

I always enjoy looking back and analyzing how my mind works! So perhaps this will help you to start thinking about trends and style in a whole new way. Remember no idea is an original one. Everything has been derived from something else. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen colored leather and furs over the years, and it won’t be the last. So keep those eyes on the lookout. Spring 2012 is going to be brighter, bolder and more leathery than ever before.

Class dismissed.
