Last fall, menswear took a serious sartorial turn and there is no looking back! Neutral colors and minimal accessories took a backseat to funky patterns, take-notice color palettes, and statement accessories. Fall 2012 is all about dressing with panache. This season’s top trends drew inspiration from the modern dandy. The modern dandy is a man who considers fashion over function, dresses with personality, style, and class. Here’s a look at Laurie B approved top 10 trends for Fall 2012.
Bold Prints – Bold prints were seen all over the men’s Fall 2012 shows. Although they might be a bit too much for most, bold prints are a great way to add character to your look. To ease into the trend, try experimenting with a floral or painterly-print tie.
Statement Shoes – From bright colors to intricate detail, menswear designers did not want footwear to go unnoticed this fall. Adding a pair of statement shoes is a quick and easy way to reinvent last year’s wardrobe.
Black Leather Jackets – A black leather jacket is always a good choice. It can be worn with just about anything, and can transform even a simple t-shirt from comfy to cool in the bat of an eye. Go classic in a blazer or edgy with a moto shape.
Dark Red – Dark red is definitely the color of the season. It is warm, luxurious, and looks great with neutrals! Update last year’s camel colored coat by adding a crimson scarf or hat. The subtle pop of color will breathe new life into last year’s cold weather gear.
Hats – Hats of all shapes and sizes appeared in several shows. Although the idea of pairing a hat with a suit was quirky, it is a charming touch you will grow to love.
Turtlenecks – Perhaps the most achievable trend taken from the Fall 2012 runways is the turtleneck. They are great for everyday wear and are appropriate for almost any casual occasion. The best part about turtlenecks is that you can find them just about anywhere and at any price.
Double-Breasted Sports Coats – Carrying over from Fall 2011 and Spring 2012, double-breasted sports coats are going strong for this coming fall. How is it that something so vintage inspired can feel so modern? Reinvention! If you didn’t invest in one last year, now is the time to do so.
Relaxed Trousers – In the past, fitted trousers have dominated the runways but not this year! This time around several designers have opted for higher waist and slouchier fit, an obvious nod to the zoot suit. 1920s styling is most notable new trend for womenswear and has officially made its way to menswear.
Cobalt Blue – Cobalt blue is a great way to bring attention to yourself, without going over the top. It is much more exciting than black or navy, and brightens up an outfit, and can pair with all of your neutrals. Try going for a cobalt button front shirt, or tie. Start small, or go big with cobalt slacks.
Velvet Blazers – If you have to choose one investment piece this fall, the velvet blazer is the way to go. Definitely only appropriate for the fall time, it’s the perfect update and wardrobe addition to last year’s fall garb. It can be worn with dress slacks, or jeans and can make even the simplest outfit appear chic, rich and luxurious.
