Sporty looks were another top trend that dominated the Resort 2012 runways. And with one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions being to get in shape, the timing on this one couldn’t be better. But this trend is about more than just wearing your workout clothes outside the gym; it’s about infusing a daytime or nighttime look with elements of sporty chic yet without looking like you just came off the treadmill.
One of the most popular sporty themes on the runway was scuba-inspired looks made of neoprene. Michael Kors and Derek Lam both showed sleek scuba styles ready to catch a wave. Alexander Wang’s striped athletic style shorts paired with heels, a cropped tee and a sleek jacket were, to me, what this trend is all about. This look wasn’t too costumey or over-the-top but instead was the perfect marriage of sporty and sexy. Another favorite was Reed Krakoff’s orange-red moto inspired look. The structured folds in the fabric really added another dimension to things.
If you’re looking to wear this trend now, Topshop has a fabulous scuba-style dress with fluoro sleeves that’s right on target. I’m also extremely partial to the neoprene styles that ASOS.com is offering, specifically their Neoprene Strap Dress, as the skirt reminds me of the Reed Krakoff look. And there are tons of stripey shorts out there- I like this Enza Costa pair, which could be easily dressed up with a black blazer and heels. For me, this trend is all about mixing and matching, pairing the casual sporty elements with dressier components. Go try it at home and I’ll see you on the field!
